08 August 2022, Bandar Seri Begawan:

The Bangladesh High Commission in Brunei Darussalam organized a program to observe the 92nd Birth Anniversary of Bangamata Begum Fazilatun Nesa Mujib with due solemnity on 08 August 2022. The program started with the recitation of Holy Quran and special prayer for the departed souls of Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman, Bangamata Begum Fazilatun Nesa Mujib and other martyrs. In honour of Bangamata, one minute silence was observed with due solemnity. The Bangladesh High Commissioner Mrs Nahida Rahman Shumona read out special messages from the Hon'ble President of Bangladesh Md. Abdul Hamid, and from the Hon'ble Prime Minister of Bangladesh Sheikh Hasina who is the eldest daughter of Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman, and Bangamata Begum Fazilatun Nesa Mujib. Members of the Bangladesh community, and other guests joined the Bangladesh High Commissioner in offering floral wreaths to Bangamata’s portrait.

While the screening of the documentary made on Bangamata, provided a clear account of the life, dedication, and struggle of Bangamata, the Bangladesh High Commissioner took upon herself the responsibility to elaborate on the meaningful and glorious life of Bangamata. The Bangladesh High Commissioner proudly told that behind every political success of Bangabandhu were the inspiration, dedication and contribution of Bangamata who never acted upon her self-interest or receded while supporting Bangabandhu. She added that Bangabandhu and Bangamata were complementary to each other, and the history of Bangabandhu’s political struggle is therefore deeply rooted in his understanding with Bangamata who never sought attention rather supported Bangabandhu in every possible way. The entire nation therefore owes Bangamata a lot for her unconditional support to Bangabandhu in all phases of his life. The Bangladesh High Commissioner further added that Bangabandhu had to spend a significant amount of time in jail for his political position and actions. During that period, Bangamata took care of their five children and helped them at her best to grow up as good human beings. She was also under house arrest in 1971 when Bangabandhu was arrested and taken to erstwhile West Pakistan, now called Pakistan. The program took an emotional turn when the guests from other nationalities including Brunei and India, started expressing how the story of Bangamata had touched their delicate chord. They have requested the Bangladesh High Commissioner to organize such programmes in greater numbers and bring occasions for them to know more such stories about the lives of luminaries of Bangladesh. The Bangladesh High Commissioner assured them that the distortion of history of Bangladesh will not be tolerated anymore and that the real history of Bangladesh will be made known to all. Mr. Nuruzzaman, a Bangladeshi businessman in Brunei, recited a beautiful poem on Bangamata written by him. The Bangladesh High Commissioner sincerely thanked everyone for attending the program, and called upon them to pray for Bangamata Begum Fazilatun Nesa Mujib and to contribute to the best of their ability to build ‘Sonar Bangla' envisioned by Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman, the Father of the Nation.
