Foreign Minister at Brussels

EU reiterated full support to Bangladesh for resolution of Rohingya crisis

This was conveyed to Bangladesh Foreign Minister AH Mahmood Ali when he met with EU High Representative for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy and European Commission Vice President (HRVP) Ms Federica Mogherini in Brussels this morning. During the meeting Ms Mogherini expressed deep admiration and appreciation for Bangladesh for its generosity, patience, solidarity and 'humanity' in dealing with Rohingya crisis. She further reassured that EU will remain with Bangladesh on this matter.

Foreign Minister Ali briefed Ms Mogherini on bilateral engagements and arrangements made so far for safe, dignified and sustainable return of the forcibly displaced Myanmar nationals. He emphasized on the need for sustained international pressure on Myanmar authorities, particularly on the military, to create conducive environment for safe and dignified return of the Rohingyas to their home in Myanmar.

They briefly discussed about the Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) between Bangladesh and EU for identification and return of the persons without an authorisation to stay in EU member States and expressed satisfaction at the progress made so far of its implementation. They also exchanged views on other issues of mutual interest.

Bangladesh Ambassador to Belgium and EU Mohammed Shahdat Hossain and DG (West Europe and EU) Mohammad Khorshed Khastagir, of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, among others, were present in the meeting.

Foreign Minister Ali held Bilateral Meeting with Belgian Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Didier Reynders

Early in the day, the Bangladesh Foreign Minister held Bilateral Meeting with his Belgian counterpart at his office. The Belgian Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister highly appreciated Bangladesh's generous role in hosting a large number of displaced Rohingyas in Bangladesh. He further expressed concern about continued human rights violation of Rohingya community in Myanmar.

The Belgian Foreign Minister expressed condolence and sympathy at the death of Bangladeshi peacekeepers in Mali. In that context he appreciated Bangladesh's contribution global peace and security and both the ministers agreed to enhance cooperation at multilateral forum, including UN Security Council.

The Belgian Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister also emphasized on enhanced collaboration between Business communities of the two countries and in that context underscored the need for regular exchange of Business delegation. Foreign Minister Ali agreed to the proposed wider Business engagements between the two countries and invited Belgian investments in sectors like pharmaceuticals, energy, dredging, infrastructure.

Foreign Minister Ali met with MEPs over dinner yesterday at Bangladesh House and exchanged views with Members of European Parliament. The MEPs assured to continue keeping pressure on Myanmar and appreciated Bangladesh's humanitarian approach towards the Rohingya. Minister Ali sought their support for implementation of arrangements made, including full implementation of Annan Commission's Report leading to citizenship Rohingyas.
