“Geographical Indication (GI) Products of Bangladesh: Knowing Bangladesh Program” arranged by Bangladesh Deputy High Commission in Karachi

 

Karachi, 18 February 2024:

 

Bangladesh Deputy High Commission in Karachi arranged a “Knowing Bangladesh Program: The Geographical Indication (GI) Products of Bangladesh” at the Chancery on 18 February 2024. Around 75 persons including nationals from Japan, Pakistan and Bangladesh participated at the Program. 

 

The Deputy High Commissioner of Bangladesh in Karachi S. M. Mahbubul Alam mentioned that the GI-approved products in Bangladesh reaffirm the country's rich heritage and diverse offerings on the global stage. He mentioned that there are 31 products of Bangladesh (as of 18 February 2024) in the prestigious list of items recognized for their unique geographical origin, traditional craftsmanship, and cultural significance. Bangladesh has taken  initiative to protect and promote the distinctive qualities of locally produced goods.

 

Deputy High Commissioner S. M. Mahbubul Alam further mentioned that the notable GI-approved products in Banglades are the iconic Muslin from Dhaka, Jamdani Saree, Rajshahi Silk, Tangail Saree, Bangladesh Hilsa, Kataribhog Rice from Dinajpur, Kalijira Rice of Bangladesh, Shotoronji of Rangpur, Fazli Mango from RajshahiChapainawabganj Khirsapat Mango, Haribhanga Mango of Rangpur, Agar and Agar-Atar of Moulvibazar, Manda of Muktgacha, Amritsagar Kala of Narsingdi, Rasgolla of Gopalganj, Nakshi Kantha of Jamalpur, Khejur Gur (Date Molasses) of Jessore, Sweet Betel Leaf of Rajshahi, Sada Mati (The White Clay) of Bijoypur, Bagda Prawn of Bangladesh, Shitalpati from Sylhet, Bogura’s Doi, Kachagolla from Natore, Rosmalai from Cumilla, and Tulshimala Rice Sherpur.

 

Deputy High Commissioner opined that the GI Products of Bangladesh showcase the country's rich cultural heritage and unique craftsmanship, attracting both domestic and international acclaim. The significance of GI recognition extends beyond mere acknowledgment of origin. He further added that the GI Products of Bangladesh also serve as a tool for economic empowerment, fostering innovation, and preserving traditional knowledge. He attached importance that the GI status enhances the marketability of products, protecting them from imitation and ensuring fair returns for producers.

 

Deputy High Commissioner also mentioned that Government of Bangladesh has enacted the Geographical Indication Products (Registration and Protection) Act in 2013, followed by the formulation of the Geographical Indications Rules in 2015. Bangladesh has steadily expanded its roster of GI-approved products, highlighting the diversity and excellence of its traditional industries in Bangladesh.

 

Deputy High Commissioner in his remarks also outlined the importance of “Knowing Bangladesh: The Geographical Indication (GI) Products of Bangladesh”. This program is was aimed to know Bangladesh and to contribute in image building and branding of Bangladesh overseas.
