Press Release

"The Government has put forth its best efforts to help out the foreign citizens in Bangaldesh"

Dhaka, 5 April 2020
The Government of Bangladesh has put forth its best efforts to help out the foreign citizens and permanent residents (PRs) stranded in Bangladesh. Government has extended its wholehearted cooperation to the foreign missions in Dhaka who sought assistance to take their citizens and PRs keen to stand by their family members during this crisis period. So far the government has facilitated six special flights including two flights to USA consisting of over 900 passengers. Most of them being regular visitors arriving in Bangladesh before the COVID-19 outbreak, became stranded as the regular flight operations were suspended. As they started to contact the embassies and request for the repatriation, embassies undertook measures in collaboration with the government to arrange charter flights. About 85 percent of USA-bound passengers are Bangladeshi-born US citizens and PRs who traveled to reunite with their families and accompany them during the time when they need them most. A significant number of PRs had to travel back to USA before the deadline period, a legal obligation that needs to be obliged by all PRs. A large number of Japanese and Russians who have left and are in the process of leaving were engaged in different projects which are currently not in operation. So these experts & consultants have decided to join their families as currently they do not have much work. As soon as the situation normalizes, all of them are expected to return. Among other cases, a good number of foreign students studying in Bangladesh have flown back and are in the process of leaving Bangladesh as all the educational institutions are presently closed. In the same spirit, Government remains committed to providing adequate health facilities and support to the foreign citizens and PRs living inside the country, particularly diplomats and their families.

Bangladesh Foreign Service Association to donate their full Boishakhi Allowance to Honorable Prime Minister's Relief Fund in an effort to join hands in nation’s fight against COVID-19

The world today is experiencing an unprecedented prevalence of the novel coronavirus (Covid-19). This global pandemic, as declared by the World Health Organization, has already spread to more than 200 countries and infected more than one million people, of which about sixty five thousand have already died. The unbelievable rate of spreading of the virus is only worsened by the fact that it lacks any specific antidote to be dealt with. Even developed countries like the United States, France, Italy, Spain are finding themselves in abyss while fighting this crisis which is being said to be the ‘greatest’ faced by the humanity after the WWII.

Bangladesh, however, has so far been successful in containing the spread of the virus at a tolerable level thanks to the timely and effective steps taken by the Government of Bangladesh and the sincere efforts of all concerned. As part of this effort, Government of Bangladesh has declared a general closure of all the government and non-government offices and educational institutions, excluding the production of urgent services and regular necessities, till 14 April 2020 as well as has banned all public gatherings to ensure preventive ‘social distancing’.

Meanwhile, as the government is working diligently to employ its full capacity behind empowering the health service to deal with any unforeseen situation by monitoring the situation of the most affected countries, it has taken elaborate initiatives along with food and finance assistance to meet up the urgent needs of the working people who have stopped earning due to this unexpected break.
Beside these government initiatives, various private organizations and individuals have also come forward to provide voluntary healthcare services and provide necessary support to the low income people.

At this grave moment of national crisis, officials and employees of all levels of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs are being entrusted with the responsibility of being the responsible public servants of the Republic. Side by side, members of the Bangladesh Foreign Service Association, as public servants and citizens of the state, have always come forward to support the government's initiatives and provide assistance from the individual level. In consistence with that legacy, all the members of Bangladesh Foreign Service Association have decided to give their money for this year's Baishakhi allowance to the Hon'ble Prime Minister's Relief Fund. The amount to be paid by the Bangladesh Foreign Service Association is approximately Tk 30 (thirty) lakh.

With this small contribution, Bangladesh Foreign Service Association is also in solidarity with the Hon'ble Prime Minister's directive to observe this year’s Bengali New Year in an unceremonious manner.

It would be pertinent to note here that the Foreign Ministry officials and employees working in different parts of the world have already pledged to pay the equivalent of their one day's wages to the Prime Minister's Relief Fund at the call of the Hon’ble Foreign Minister to participate in the Prime Minister's Housing Program for the homeless on the momentous occasion of the birth centenary of the Father of the Nation Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman, ‘Mujib Shotoborsho 2020’.

Bangladesh Foreign Service Association is, as always, committed to extend their heart for the any humanitarian cause during any national crisis, in addition to implementing all Government priorities. To this end, members of this Association are pledging to remain relentless in providing any emergency assistance to the expatriate Bangladeshis during this global Corona crisis.
